History

Grace Classical School began in the summer of 2015 as an idea that God put in the hearts of parents, Shane and Katie Martin, who desired to educate their children intentionally and classically, while training them in Truth.   The goal was simply this:  to educate children in such a way that they would love learning for a lifetime; that every idea, every decision and every viewpoint they ever entertain would be measured against the Word of God.

With this type of education in mind, they searched for a school in their geographic area that would teach their children in this way.  The Lord quickly revealed the need for a classical Christian school in Jacksonville, NC.  The format desired was one that provides structure and accountability while allowing students to also spend as much time as possible with their family, a hybrid between private school and homeschooling.  They asked the Lord for the next step.  Seeking wisdom and advice, Katie soon met with Betsy Reiss to pray and discuss ideas.  Betsy was a fellow homeschool mom who had already taught Katie so much about classical education.  Betsy and Katie walked and talked and prayed for nearly 3 hours.  Within a few weeks, the Lord brought others with classroom and administrative experience in classical Christian schools, providing the needed members to form a school board.  The board formed a Christ-centered vision for the school and joined with the ACCS. From this foundation, Grace Classical School was developed.

In August of 2016, Grace Classical opened its doors for the first school year to 25 K-8 students, 5 lead teachers, 3 assistant teachers, and Head of School Liesl Christensen, who has years of classical Christian experience.  We ended our inaugural year with 28 students and a faith in our great God that has deepened through all of the challenges and lessons that a first school year brings!
